Stunning Mountain Views
Rich Marine Ecosystem
Expert Guided Experience

Description

This is the paddle that makes people fall in love with the island. Just minutes from town, we launch into a surprisingly wild coastal landscape of quiet barrier islands, kelp forests, tide pools, and wildlife-rich waters framed by Kodiak’s dramatic mountains. Sea otters drift through the kelp, puffins dart overhead, bald eagles patrol the shoreline, and seals and sea lions are frequent companions along the route. Over the course of this two and a half hour adventure, your local guide brings these waters to life with stories, wildlife knowledge, and an intimate understanding of the tides and coastline that only comes from years spent paddling here. Perfect for families, beginners, and anyone visiting Kodiak who wants to experience the island the way locals do.

Itinerary

1
We meet for this tour, just 5 minutes from downtown Kodiak with a launch site over on Near Island at the float plane docks. While centrally located, you can feel far from town as we skirt small, protected barrier islands just offshore.
2
Paddle through the serene waters, guided by expert instructors. We can explore several amazing spots from this one launch site with a few possible routes to choose from! Each tour is customized to the group, interests, weather and abilities of the paddlers.
3
Observe the diverse marine life and stunning landscapes as we paddle just outside of town. We see a bit of everything from this tour location- sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, bald eagles, puffins, and not to mention our incredible tide pool critters below the surface!
4
Head back to the starting point, concluding the tour. Depending on the route chosen that day, you may circumnavigate the outer barrier islands or return along a similar path to the one you took if venturing out to Puffin Island and back!

Frequently asked questions

Comfortable clothing, a water bottle, and sunscreen.
No, beginners are welcome and invited. All kayakers will receive guidance and a paddle talk before we hit the water!
Tours may be canceled or rescheduled due to unsafe weather conditions. We still kayak in a drizzling rain, these can be some of the paddles with the most wildlife sightings in fact! However if it's a drenching downpour or too windy to be safe for paddling, we will make that call. All communications will occur between your expert guide and the person whose contact info is associated with the booking. We strive to always reschedule or relocate a tour where weather poses a threat to safety. Safety is number one. Full refunds are given in the event that we have to cancel for weather and cannot get you out on the water during your stay.
Yes, participants must be at least 6 years old.

Things to know

Difficulty

Any experience level is welcome and invited here. Novice paddlers may find these waters a bit calmer than other launch sites and tours. Selected for our tours based out of town due to the protected nature of the sea, it can be an ideal choice for beginners.

Accessibility

We do not offer transportation to any of our tours, but if you don't have a vehicle, this spot is the easiest for hailing a taxi or even walking if you feel up to some exercise before and after the tour!

Weather Conditions

Tours are subject to weather conditions; cancellations may occur. We will run a tour even if it's raining, sometimes our best wildlife sightings happen in these conditions. This is one of the more protected areas of the island and we generally only have to cancel a tour if the wind is too rowdy to be safe at sea. We always take care of our guests, either rebooking or relocating or refunding our guests in the event of a weather call. Safety is priority one.

Age Requirement

Participants must be at least 6 years old. If you have a young paddler in your group, they will sit in the front of a tandem kayak and should be paired with a strong paddler.

What to Bring

Wear comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle. You dress similarly to how you would for an island hike on Kodiak. Lots of layers as the island can switch from cool and rainy to sunny and warm in a matter of minutes! A light rain jacket as an outer barrier for rain or wind is always a good call. For footwear, don whatever you prefer as long as it is comfortable! Your feet may get a little wet but will stay dry for the most part as your guide assists you with launching the sea kayak. A hat or pair of sunglasses is also highly recommended.

Safety First

Life jackets and safety equipment are provided. Our guides are trained in rescue techniques and have safety gear on-hand with them to handle an emergency on the water. We take time at the beginning of each tour to ensure proper life jacket fit for each guest to ensure your safety while paddling.

Sea Islands Expedition

The Sea Islands Expedition is Kayak Kodiak's signature tour — and one guests talk about for years. Three hours paddling through clear, shallow water along the remote side of the island, with unobstructed views of the mountains and the kind of wildlife access you simply can't get from shore. Puffins nesting on rocky outcroppings. Sea otters floating in the kelp. Seals watching you from a curious distance. Your guide brings a naturalist's eye to everything you encounter — this isn't just a paddle, it's an education in one of the most productive marine ecosystems on the planet. Suitable for all experience levels. No kayaking background required — just a willingness to get out on the water and see what shows up.

Kodiak Harbor tours by kayak

You have a few hours in Kodiak. Don't spend them in a gift shop. This 2.5 hour harbor tour is built specifically for cruise ship passengers who want a real Alaskan experience before the ship calls. Paddle through Kodiak's working harbor — one of the most productive fishing ports in the world — with a local guide who knows every corner of it. Bald eagles overhead, sea otters in the kelp, fishing vessels coming and going. This is Kodiak as it actually is, not as it's packaged for tourists. We time the tour to get you back to the dock with room to grab a local bite before you sail. Easy, unforgettable, and nothing like anything else on offer at the port.
