A Naturalist on Every Tour Our marine biology roots show up on every single outing. When a sea otter cracks open a urchin fifty feet from your kayak, or a puffin buzzes your bow on the way back to its nest, you'll have someone next to you who can tell you exactly what you're looking at and why it matters. We keep our company small, and use only the best guides to give you the experience we would want if we were touring the island. No Two Tours Are the Same Kodiak's weather, tides, and wildlife are always moving. Our guides adapt every tour in real time — which means the guests who paddled this route last Tuesday saw something completely different from what you'll see today. We are constantly scanning the forecasts and prepping for what the water may bring. This is wild Alaska, and we can't wait to show it to you from the seat of a kayak. Small Groups, Real Experience We cap our tours at 8 paddlers. You'll know your guide's name, they'll know yours, and the ratio stays tight enough that nobody gets left behind or lost in the crowd. First-timers get the attention they need. The pace matches our least experienced paddlers so no one feels out-of-depth, and our tandem sea kayaks help equalize the playing field. Private tour offerings help experienced paddlers get the high adventure, faster-pace they might desire, or alternatively, allow novices to relax and get extra guidance out on their Alaskan sea paddling exploration.

Kodiak is one of the most ecologically rich and historically layered places in North America. The waters you'll paddle through have fed Alutiiq communities for thousands of years, sustained one of the world's great commercial fisheries, and harbor marine life that stops even longtime Alaskans in their tracks. We think that's worth knowing while you're out there — and we'll make sure you do.Whether you're a visitor with one day on the island or a local who's never seen it from a kayak, a beginner or seasoned kayaker, we'll get you on the water and show you something you won't forget.

We have a limited inventory of kayaks, so try to secure your adventure opportunity well in advance, but if you find yourself in town and want to get out- sign up and join us! Those who try to time perfect weather shouldn’t be surprised when on that sunny day, others have beaten them to taking out our kayaks or renting the SUPs, leaving you stuck on dry land.

Do I need to book in advance, or can I reserve on the day of the tour?

Yes, let us help plan your perfect outing on the water. Book any of our tours as a private group. We can reach fringes of pristine, rocky coastlines all along the outlying Kodiak area, and can tailor private trips based on your interests, weather, and time frame. Our pricing is based on the size of your group, either 1-4 paddlers, or 5-8 paddlers. This can be an excellent option if you’d rather not take your chances with your fellow paddling crew. Especially recommended for those paddlers who want to cover more ground, paddle faster, and not be slowed down by novice kayakers.

Do you offer private kayaking tours?

Customers will receive a full refund or credit with one week or more notice of cancellation. Customers will receive a 50% refund for cancellations 3-6 days prior to the tour. No refund can be given for cancellations made at 48 hours or less. Should we have to cancel our scheduled tour due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, all customers will receive a full refund or credit. If we are able to relocate the tour due to weather, all booked parties will be contacted to ensure the change is acceptable. Contact us by phone (907-512-5112) or email info@kayakingkodiak.com to cancel or inquire about a cancellation. No-shows will be charged the full price. We have a very short season in our corner of Alaska, so we thank you for understanding our need for these policies.

What should I bring?

Is prior kayaking experience required?

No, beginners are welcome and invited! You will receive guidance before we hit the water. Your expert guide will review paddle basics, get you fit to your kayak, make all adjustments so you feel comfortable and ensure you are confident before we ever leave land!

What happens in case of bad weather?

Tours may be canceled or rescheduled due to unsafe weather conditions. We still kayak in a drizzling rain, these have been some our favorite paddles to be honest! However if it's a drenching downpour or if it's too windy to be safe for paddling, we will make that call. All communications will occur between your expert guide and the person whose contact info is associated with the booking. We strive to always reschedule or relocate a tour where weather poses a threat to safety. Safety is number one. Full refunds are given in the event that we have to cancel for weather and cannot get you out on the water during your stay.

We had so much fun on the kayak tours! We went out twice because we had so much fun the first time. During our first trip, we paddled around the small islands. Jens is an awesome guide and he was so fun to talk to. He is really knowledgeable about Kodiak and gave us a great hiking recommendation. Danica did a great job explaining proper technique with the kayak. I had kayaked before but niece had not and she felt very comfortable once we got going. We were lucky we got an absolutely beautiful day and Danica took advantage of that fact. We went out to Puffin Island and got see many Puffins, two sea otters and many Arctic Terns. We had a fantastic experience on the Sea Islands tour. Although I love to kayak on lakes, I had never done so on the ocean, and I was a bit nervous, but I quickly got over the feeling. Our guide Danica was very professional and obviously had safety as a top priority. She was very knowledgable about the area, and we got to see two species of puffins, other seabirds, otters and seals. She gave us choices about what we most wanted to see, and our family had a great time. Getting out on the water was definitely a must-do experience in Kodiak, and I would highly recommend this tour!

Unforgettable Experience with Kayak Kodiak & the Amazing Guide Danica! I can’t say enough great things about Kayak Kodiak and our incredible guide, Danica! A few weeks ago, I had the absolute pleasure of kayaking around Women’s Bay in Kodiak, Alaska, and it was truly breathtaking. The scenery alone is worth the trip, but what made the experience unforgettable was Danica. She’s not only an expert guide, but also a wealth of knowledge about island life, local wildlife, and the area’s fascinating history. Her professionalism, combined with her fun, upbeat, and sometimes goofy personality, made the entire outing feel both educational and incredibly enjoyable. I loved it so much, I signed up for another event, and I’m already looking forward to future kayaking adventures with them. Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or a total beginner, I highly recommend Kayak Kodiak and especially Danica for a unique and memorable Alaskan experience. Absolutely worth every penny!

Every year my friends and I go on a kayak trip and this year (year 4) we chose Kodiak, AK. We paddled out to Puffin Island with Danica and another wonderful couple. She was so nice and was knowledgeable about all of the animals we saw, plus any questions about anything we asked, she knew. We were out on the water for about 3 hours, including time walking around the island watching puffins fly from their nests. Overall, was a wonderful experience with great views and the best guide!!

Had so much fun with guide Danica, manager Jeremiah, and adorable shop dog Banjo. Saw so many puffins it was insane! This was a fantastic half-day tour with plenty of sea otter, seal, porpoise, puffin, tern and gull sightings (our pics are no better than those already submitted). We even had a salmonberry snack upon return from the bushes at the kayak launching area. Danica was an excellent, knowledgeable guide who provided plenty of Kodiak recommendations that were spot-on. Kayaking was done at a leisurely pace that even a novice, in their 60’s couple could handle. Highly recommend!

Best part of our trip to Kodiak! My wife dragged me on the kayaking tour. I have never liked Kayaking, and I am so glad I was wrong. We saw incredible views of the island and got to see it from the eyes of our tour guide's perspective, giving background and stories to a lot of the island. Our guide mentioned how lucky we were to actually see whales breaching. Beautiful. We felt safe the entire trip. And left with pictures and memories we will always remember. Honestly, best part of my trip. And one of the best memories of my life.

This kayaking tour was a wonderful adventure! We were a little nervous about going out into the ocean in kayaks since we didn't have any experience. Hal and Eddie gave us a brief kayaking tutorial before we headed out and they made the experience so easy. The scenery was breathtaking and we loved seeing the wildlife- starfish, anemones, eagles, puffins by the hundreds, seagulls by the gazillions, and a group of the cutest curious seals who followed us from a distance. We had a great time and highly recommend this outing!

This was a wonderful experience. Our guides, Hal and Steve, are very knowledgeable about kayaking and the local environment. They had the kayaks all set up and ready for launching when we arrived. They also arranged incredible weather for us as well. The double kayaks are very comfortable and stable. We launched from Trident Basin (sea plane docks) and paddled around Popov Island. We saw numerous otters, some seals, and a variety of birds including gulls, terns, and eagles. We are experienced (Kodiak) kayakers revisiting the island after a long absence, and this was a great re-introduction to the water and wildlife. Wear or borrow boots (Xtra-tuffs are perfect) or expect to get your feet wet. Take your own water, snacks are optional. They will make a stop on a beach somewhere for a rustic rest stop. We had a stone skipping contest and Steve won with a discus-sized rock. Kayaking Kodiak is a great Alaskan experience that should not be missed.

John was our guide and did a superb job as he led 6 women and myself on an amazing trip around several islands pointing out the various wildlife, relating the history of Kodiak, and showing us hidden bunkers on a small island. It was a FANTASTIC day on the water! Hal is a wonderful guide - laidback and knowledgeable. Our niece and her friend were novices, but he was very patient with them. We booked a private tour with Maya in a remote spot in Chiniak, south of Kodiak City. It was fabulous. We met Maya and discussed what we were interested in seeing. She had everything ready for us. The bay conditions were calm and we saw the islands, bird colonies, and otters. We worked with the tides and had the wind to our back on our return. A real highlight of our trip to Alaska. Highly recommend it.

Beautiful kayak around the eastern tip of the island. The guide had a lot of interesting current and historical info of the area and could identify all the critters we saw (which helped me a lot!), and the sea planes were pretty cool. A GREAT way to see the beauty of the island!

I have not been on this particular tour, but as a kayak tour operator on Kodiak back in the 1990s - as the original "Kayak Kodiak" touring under my company Wavetamer Kayaking, I can tell you this place is spectacular for marine wildlife/birding/and scenery. The protected bays, short jaunts to rock outcropping bird rookeries and clear ocean water teeming with marine critters and plants, will seep you busy gawking throughout the trip. Depending where they go, you have a good chance to see sea otters, sea lions, bald eagles, (have seen whales on some trips) and myriad birds including puffins, guillemots, kittiwakes, murres, and more, More, MORE.I hope this tour company does the name and the adventure proud.

We chose the Sea Islands Expedition Kayaking tour and had an amazing experience. We shared tandem kayaks with our kids and there was one more couple on our tour. That was the right amount of kayaks to be able to hear our guide and chat a bit while paddling at a nice speed. Our guide was a local school teacher who was knowledgeable and made sure all of us were safe and seeing the Jellyfish, otters, puffins, kittiwakes and eagles that were around us. The tour was scheduled for low tide and we were fortunate enough to have a minus low tide. We did not do any tide pooling with this guide but it allowed us to see a lot of the underwater creatures from the kayaks around the islands. It was a great three hour tour on Kalsen Bay and the islands at the mouth of the bay. The puffins and jellyfish were the highlight of our kids trip. For the adults, we will remember the first weekend in August of 2019 as having amazing weather conditions (clear and calm and all time high temps). The location for this specific tour was a nice car ride away from town with no services nearby. Plan accordingly for that. including water and snacks. There's a great coffee and lunch spot with amazing cookies closer to Kodiak but out of town for some food after paddling for three hours. However, there are some beautiful beaches and camping spots near or on Kalsen Bay to consider if you are there for several days or can pack a picnic to enjoy afterwards. We do wish Kayak Kodiak offered some Merch. Hat, t-shirt/stickers would gladly be worn to 'show off' this tour we did and to remember it. The logo is just cool, and not many people get to say they Kayaked Kodiak :).

The guide was well organized and very knowledgeable about the area. The equipment was in good condition and the boats were comfortable and stable. Small groups make communication and paddling hints easy to understand. Easy in and out launch sites good opportunity to see seals, birds and otters up close. No whales on our trip but there occasionally. Not too strenuous. Good for all levels of paddling. groups, and singles can go on same trip. Childrn should be at least 5 or 6 so they can sit in a kayak for an hour or more at a time they do not necessarily need to paddle if adult is willing to do the extra effort. Not recommended for babies or very young children. Very safety conscious group.

We had the most beautiful day for our three hour tour of Near Island and beyond. Hal was fantastic guide. He set a nice pace. He was so pleasant to talk to (Lots in common with our age), very informative about the various islands we kayaked around and guided us well with the sea planes landing in the same vacinity. We kayaked from Near Island around several other small islets in the Kodiak harbor area. We had several family members in our group; five twenty somethings and two of us in our early 60s. Hal was our tour leader. He has lived on Kodiak for 30+ years and is an avid outdoorsman. He was very professional, knew tons about the local history, flora, fauna and geology. He kept a good comfortable pace and it was very enjoyable to listen to his stories. We were able to get observe many Puffins and other sea birds close up. It was a beautiful warm, sunny day for Kodiak. We took a shorter 2 hour tour, perfect for our group after a busy week and needing to catch a flight soon thereafter. Kayak Kodiak had good quality kayaks and gear. Jennifer was super to work with coordinating this tour by e mail and tailoring something for our group. This was the second time we have kayaked with this group in Kodiak and both were great experiences.

I felt very safe. It was clear the female owner was a professional and knew what she was doing. The weather was not great but we still managed to have a great and safe experience. We did not see or come close to whales but we did see harbor seals, puffins,seals,sea others,eagles and porpuses! I would recommend that they provide a bottled water and small snacks as nut bags and fruit when they stop on a beach and maybe 2 hours kayak trip,4 hours and 8 hours trips with lunch and drinks. I think that would even make them better.

My family and I had a wonderful experience with Kayak Kodiak in mid-August 2018 on the Sea Islands tour. Our guide, Jennifer, was experienced, warm and delightful. We saw these adorable puffins, both horned and tufted puffins, flying across the water like little flying machines. We also saw bald eagles, sea gulls & chicks, harbor seals and sea otters. Jennifer is a wonderful guide. As a biologist, she can tell you much about the wildlife you see while you paddle in beautiful water surrounding Kodiak Island. We paddled around Chiniak Bay and observed harbor seals and hundreds of puffins. This was my first time kayaking in the ocean. Jennifer gave very good paddling instructions. When I followed them I really felt like I could have paddled for much longer than the 3 hours we were gone. I had no muscle soreness the following day. I definitely recommend including this in your Kodiak experience and would like to do it again on a future trip. My 20 year old daughter was with me and there were young children, too, who did well.

My friend came to visit me in Kodiak and I called Kayak Kodiak knowing they would be able to hook it up last minute, and they did! Jennifer took us on an adventure around Sea islands off of Chiniak and we saw harbor seals in their natural habitat, who were just as surprised to see us as we were them! We beached our kayaks on an island and checked out the tide pools, she pointed out the sea anemone's and we searched for Kodiak beach treasures. The views of Kodiak from the water were breath taking. Our morning kayak with Jen was phenomenal. Had a friend visiting from Florida and knew we had to get out kayaking. Jen is the perfect blend of instructor, guide, iPhone photographer, and naturalist. She knew exactly how to set the pace for our abilities and was just as excited to view the life underwater as we were, seeing it for the first time. We had an awesome time out paddling with Jenn! This was a great way to see more of the beauty around Kodiak and Near Island. Jenn took us out to an area where we had an incredible whale sighting--a truly magical thing to witness a whale breach multiple times. While we felt incredibly lucky to witness what we did, we understand Jenn is not able to produce breaching whales on demand. She is, however, very knowledgeable and insightful about the area all the surrounding wildlife. She took us to the right places that gave us the best chance to see wildlife and beautiful scenery.

I'll admit that I wasn't overly excited about a kayaking tour when it was first suggested but, with my want to try new things, I agreed to it. My boyfriend and I were visiting his parents and his mom (Rose) was sure that this would be a great way to spend a morning... she was not wrong. We drove down Anton Larson until we saw someone unloading kayaks and figured that was our stop. Jennifer greeted us with a warmth that instantly put me at ease. She had remembered her conversation with Rose and her joy in having us along for the tour was contagious. Having never kayaked, she talked me through everything I should expect. We carried the kayaks down to the beach and launched. I was instantly so glad I had done the tour. She was immediately enthusiastically pointing out wildlife and plants with a thorough, yet fun explanation of what everything was and what part it played. When we saw animals she was respectful of their territory but got us close enough to get to see a lot of amazing things. The water was so calm that we were able to go out further than usual and see Puffins coming out of their burrows! It was truly a remarkable day and so much of that was driven by Jennifer's passion for nature and her love of sharing that passion.
