Nervous About Sea Kayaking? You're Not Alone (And We've Got You)

One of our recent guests confided that she was rather nervous before coming out with us — she'd paddled often, but only in lakes, never on the ocean. Let alone off the coast of Alaska!!

Two days later, she had booked a second paddle with us and shared that sea kayaking around the islands with us was her favorite thing she did while on the island.

But her fears are not uncommon — I imagine many folks have the exact same concerns. I'm not in shape enough for this! I don't want to fall in! I've never kayaked before! Have no fear, my friends! Our tours are designed with all of these considerations in mind, and we've got you covered — from expert instruction to the most stable, top-of-the-line tandem sea kayaks.

So let's talk through exactly what that means, because I think when you know what to expect, the nerves start to melt away.

Small Groups, Always

We cap our tours at 6 guests, split across two guides. That's not just a nice touch — it means you're never trying to keep up with a big pack of strangers. Your guide can actually see you, adjust the pace to you, and give you real, individual attention instead of a rushed safety talk and a shove off the shoreline.

We Go at Your Pace, on Water That Matches It

There's no schedule to keep. If you want to stop, drift, and watch eagles for ten minutes, we stop. And we choose our routes with this in mind — calm, protected bays and inlets, not open-water crossings. Every single trip, we also pick that day's route based on the wind and water conditions, so you're always out on the calmest option available that day.

Tandem Kayaks: Way More Stable Than You're Picturing

If the image in your head is a narrow little solo sea kayak that tips if you sneeze — that's not what you're getting in with us. Our tandem kayaks are wide, stable, and genuinely hard to tip over. You're paddling alongside a partner or your guide, and the stability surprises almost everyone the first time they sit down in one.

Real Instruction, Every Time

Whether you've never touched a paddle or you're just rusty, every tour includes:

  • How to get in and out of the kayak without an accidental swim
  • Proper paddling mechanics, so your arms and shoulders aren't wrecked an hour in
  • How to sit, balance, and stay steady in your seat
  • A full gear walkthrough — paddle, skirt, PFD, what everything does and why
  • On-the-water coaching the whole trip — your guide is right there making small corrections as you go, not watching from a distance

What About the Spray Skirt?

We know this one causes some hesitation — it can look like it might trap you in the boat. It doesn't. We fit it and show you exactly how the quick-release works before we ever leave the beach, so getting out is fast and easy any time you need to. We also are happy to accomodate you, if you're still nervous about it and as long as the weather is calm and it's safe to skip it- we're happy to take that route.

So, Take a Breath :)

If you've been eyeing a Kodiak sea kayaking trip but talking yourself out of it — because of your fitness level, your balance, or just because you've never done it before — this is exactly the reassurance I'd want someone to give me before I tried something new and a little scary. Small groups. Calm water. Boats that don't want to tip. A guide beside you the whole way.

Come find out, like our guest did, that the thing you were most nervous about might just become your favorite part of the trip.
